Purpose Statement

Juliemchen.io is a place where every day people can find research-backed tips on ways to better enjoy their daily work-lives, and hopefully improve increase their overall wellness and happiness too! Join me in my quest to improve the lives of workers, one post at a time  The goal is to have this be for both people working and students, to help them realize that they’re not alone in their experiences at work or at school.

I hope to be the bridge between research and practice, so that employees don’t have to dig through pages upon pages of scientific jargon that they may not understand with time that they do not have. I want to show the usefulness of research practices being applied in the workplace to help people find meaning in their work, as well as increase overall productivity. More importantly, I want to show that applying research practices is not as far-fetched or difficult as it may seem, and how even small changes can have a large impact upon an employee’s daily life.

Growing up, I never knew what I wanted to be, but I knew that I wanted to be in a profession that I loved, doing work that was meaningful to me. Yet, I watched adults around me scoff at the idea that a job could be anything more than a simple 9-5 to pay the bills. As I grew up, with this idea still in mind, I stumbled onto the study of Industrial-Organizational Psychology, which does exactly what kid-version Julie hoped to do – make work meaningful and enjoyable for everyone. While a job can still be a 9-5 job to pay the bills, there are still ways to find meaning in that boring, repetitive environment to make the time pass faster, to make find value in the work, to actually enjoy the 9 to 5, and be happier both at work and out of work.

I want to make the dream of people loving their jobs a reality, because there is so much research that we can use and implement into our daily, individual lives. Let me help you balance out the work life from your life life so that you, as a whole, can enjoy both to the fullest.

Who am I?

I am a first generation American, born and raised in New Jersey, and currently residing in Ohio while I get my PhD in I/O Psychology. I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and grew up in a Taiwanese household, learning to play the violin, piano, guitar, and ukulele. I am not only an avid sports fan, but also a first time dog mama to a 6 year old boxer-shepherd rescue, and a professional shower singer. When I’m not reading research articles for school, you can usually find me napping with my dog, playing volleyball with friends, or crying to the latest hit television show.

I studied at Villanova University for my undergraduate degree, where I majored in psychology and graduated in 3.5 years. I’m currently a finishing my dissertation and my research focuses are feedback, diversity equity and inclusion, and microaggressions. I wrote my master’s thesis on Reactions to the Feedback Environment and my dissertation is looking at microaggressions in the workplace and possible interventions to decrease the negative effects of microaggressions.

Currently I work at Mattingly Solutions as a DEIx & I/O Project Lead.
